Dramatic Soprano Melissa Montague Sumner has appeared in opera, oratorio, and recital throughout the United States and in Europe. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, Brevard Music Center, Mittelsächsisches Theater in Freiberg, New York Lyric Opera, Ash Lawn Opera Festival, The Staunton Music Festival, Theater Bristol, Operafestival di Roma, Luray Opera, and is a MACCO Competition winner. Operatic roles include Lia in Debussy's L'Enfant Prodigue, Suor Angelica in Puccini's Suor Angelica, Ilia in Mozart's Idomeneo, Gretel and Gertrude in Hänsel und Gretel, Hannah in The Merry Widow, and Giorgetta in Puccini's Il Tabarro. Ms. Sumner made her operatic debut as Edith in Knoxville operas production of The Pirates of Penzannce, and in 2008, she performed with the Wagner Opera Theater of New York under the baton of David Gilbert, making her Wagnerian debut as Gerhilde in Wagner's Die Walküre, a role she has also performed at Lincoln Center. In the spring of 2012, she returned to New York Lyric Opera to sing Sieglinde in Wagner's Die Walküre. She performed her first Helwige in St. Louis with Union Avenue Opera in August 2013 and reprised the role at Carnegie Hall. Recent and upcoming engagements include recitals at Radford University and Bridegwater College.
